  • Most cell surface markers allow each cell type to be uniquely identified, often allowing other cells/organisms/enzymes/etc to bind to them and interact with them. An example would be in the immune system. When a foreign cell enters the body, it's cell surface markers are recognised by components of the immune system. These then bind to the foreign cell, sometimes producing further cell surface markers to recruit more immune cells to the site, allowing its destruction
