  • Sadly, yes. Does he eat other dog's poop as well? Mine used to & he caught Parvo from the other dog that was infected.
  • From what I've heard, some humans do it to.
  • Some dogs do. You shouldn't let him. Especially don't let him eat other animal poo as he could get worms or other types of infections.
  • We used to raise English Bulldogs. Since you're probably feeding him/her enough and their digesting it and not just looking for more nutrients, You can buy an additive(Fosters and Smith online) that you add to their food and they won't do that much longer. It's a habit like humans chew finger nails.. Hope this helps.
  • I used to have a dog that did that. Nothing like having your dog walk up to you with a turd hanging out of her mouth like a cigar. She did keep the yard clean tho.
  • It's definetly not unheard of but I don't see how it could be good for your dog in anyway.
  • My dog used to do that too so yeah i guess its normal but gross.
  • Well... what does "normal" mean to you, are there other dogs that do it? Yes Should they do it? NO Usually when a dog eats its own poo it is because the food you are giving it is either too hard for the dogs digestive system to break down (meaning there is a lot of stuff in it that the dog doesn't need).. or the dog is starving (either for nutrition or just for food). They do sell a pill that you can give your dog to make his poo taste nasty so that he won't want to eat it. You might want to look for some as a temporary measure. I highly suggest you change your dog's food, try Wellness, Canidae, Eagle Pack, Premium Edge, Chicken Soup, or some other high quality dog food... or you could always feed raw if you wanted. Just out of curiousity, What food is your dog on?
  • Coprophagia...the fancy word for POOP eating... This is not normal per se, but it is assuredly common enough that there are almost as many theories and suggestions as to WHY it happens as there are different dog breeds. The only thing out numbering the discussions on why it happens are the discussions on how to prevent it from happening...and some are beyond silly. I do know of some dogs who were house trained using negative training methods, yelling, swatting and the old rub yur nose in it...these dogs all adopted poop eating, perhaps as a way to remove the offending turds before their owners could go bonkers about it... Puppies too often do go through a phase of picking up turds...but generally stop it..especially with other interesting, fun and positive reward games to play...I would say something like "oooh yuck!" but I don't make a huge negative deal out of it...I want the dog to NOT THINK about doing it at all. I've also used hot sauce...and it needs to be REALLY, REALLY hot to repulse the dog. Kinda hot only seems to stimulate an appreciation for taco's and Hot Wings... This site has some fairly decent ideas on the why it happens and HOW to help curb your dog's appetite for eating its own feces. http://www.pet-comfort-products.com/why-dogs-eat-poop.html This site covers some of the prior thoughts, but adds another layer to understanding this undesired behavior a little better. http://www.dogtrainingbasics.com/Poop%20Eaters%20Anonymous.htm And here is the whole of what Google has to offer on it. http://www.google.com/search?q=Dogs+eating+poop&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&aq=t&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&client=firefox-a
  • I had luck with a product called Distaste (www.fostersmith.com). Products like this set up "taste aversion."
