I would use XML with a simple XSL/HTML stylesheet to do this. Edit: Example XML code which could be adapted using a stylesheet to do this.. <namelist> <name>Thomas</name> <name>Kevin>/name> . . . </namelist> And then it is a simple stylesheet to sort them, search on google, it will only take maybe 20 mins to write the style sheet and then you have a completely self written computer program that can be adapted as you please.

Microsoft Excel At the top, click on Data & then Sort, it gives you the options by which to sort by.

I agree with the others that MS Excel is the obvious choice, but for anybody who doesn't have MS Office you can download Open Office for free from http://www.openoffice.org/ and use the spreadsheet component, Calc.
