Ok,when you get a modem from your phone company, it should have a ethernet cable in the box as well. It is either a blue or yellow cable. Yes, you do have to have it in order to play games online.

You're looking at cat5 or cat6 cable with an rj45 connector. You can buy one at any local electronics store. Yes, you will need it to play online and you will probably need a router if you do not have one already.
