  • I don't know about other countries, but in America one of the driving forces to make marijuana illegal was William Randolf Hearst, the owner of a media empire. He had a lot invested in the timber industry, and therefore was spooked by the rising reliance on hemp. So, since he had the media in his control, he propagated all kinds of falsehoods about marijuana causing violence. Also, the Bureau of Narcotics latched onto the public racism against Hispanics and African Americans by propogating that marijuana use was more prevalent in those groups, especially among musicians. I got the following quotes from http://blogs.salon.com/0002762/stories/2003/12/22/whyIsMarijuanaIllegal.html: "... the primary reason to outlaw marijuana is its effect on the degenerate races." "Reefer makes darkies think they're as good as white men." "You smoke a joint and you're likely to kill your brother." Apparently, H.J. Anslinger, of the Bureau of Narcotics, even said that the term "assassin" comes from the word "hashish."
  • It is illegal because it can facilitate an awakening and an insight into the present Western culture, and lead many poeple to follow an alternative path which does not support the ideal of maximum ecomic growth and being a cog in the system. It can lead people to discover their true potential. The powers that be dont want this to happen. Look at the aternative flowering of peace, creativity and new ideas that came up in the 60's before those psychedelic drugs were banned.
  • Narcotics are illegal for obvious reasons. Marijuana is often characterised as a narcotic because its active ingredient is tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). THC is categorized this way because of how it bonds itself to specific receptors in the brain. This is similar to other narcotics like morphine and other opiates.
