NO. You cannot use the Formica. It will not last long. The tiles will pop off or crack in time. And never ever use mastic (The pre-mixed stuff in the tub) anywhere there is moisture. If you are doing this around a sink or where you will be cleaning with water, it just won't do. It doesn't dry very well and does not stay bonded whenever water is present. Why spend the money on tiles and thinset and grout to have it come up in short time? Just pull up the countertops and place some thick 3/4 plywood. Add some CBU (cement backerboard like hardibacker or Durock) with thinset underneath it to bond it to the plywood. SCREW it down with CBU screws (not drywall screws). Don't forget to tape your seams as well with CBU tape (NOT drywall tape). Then you will have a great countertop you can stand on and wash with water and no worries. Tile can be expensive. Cracked tile or grout lines with mold ar not good.
