It was certainly not Coca-Cola, as another poster has claimed.
Soda water was the first commercially produced carbonated beverage and the term "soda water" was coined at the end of the 18th century. The first fountain drink dispensers appeared early in the 19th century and commercially-bottled soda water was available shortly thereafter.
The first flavoured soft drink was ginger ale, created in the middle of the 19th century. Root beer followed a couple of decades later. The first cola drinks were produced in the 1880s. "Doctor Pepper" beat "Coca-Cola" to the market. Pepsi-Cola followed a decade later.
The Turks were the first to make sweetened carbonated drinks according to this renaissance banquet I went to.
Coca-cola was made in 1886.

But GINGER ALE was made in 1851. That's a 35-year difference. So Ginger ale was made before Coca-Cola.
