-273 C is "absolute 0" (0 Kelvin), the temperature where there is no molecular movement (heat). Temperature is a measure of molecular activity (motion). Since at -273 C molecules are motionless, it is impossible for them to go any slower. If they can't go any slower, there is no way to measure them going any slower.

An easy way to think about it is to think about a room that is pitch black, you can not remove anymore light from it to make it any darker it therefore complete void of light. With temperature once you take all the heat away it is completely void of heat and reaches 0K or -273C. (remember, you cannot add cold to anything just like you can't add darkness, so once you take all the light or heat away, that is the end of the line.) also, the reason why -273C seems like such a weird measure is because it is a system of measure developed using the melting and boiling points of water a sea level.

Heat is atoms and molecules jiggling about in a solid, sliding about in a liquid, or bouncing about in a gas. The slower things move, the colder they are. Absolute zero is where they stop dead. Since you can't get slower than stopped, you can't get colder than absolute zero.

(Actually, quantum mechanics makes it a bit more complicated, but that is 99.998 of the correct answer).

The third law of thermodynamics states that the entropy for a perfect crystalline solid at 0 kelvin is 0. So, you get get any lower temperature. Its -273.15 oC too...

yep, no movement means no heat is being produced. your body works kind of the same way. when you move around, you get hotter and produce more heat, stay calm and you'll get colder.

because if it got that cold every thing within a 5 mile radius would automatically freeze and die!!!
