  • "In classical times, Spartan officers (and Kings) would wear a 'Corinthian' style bronze helmet with a horizontal crest. Other ranks would wear Corinthian style helmets with the more common vertical crest. Corinthian style helmets are the ones that protect the entire face, leaving only a narrow slit for eyes and nose. However, since warriors were responsible for providing their own kit, there was little standardisation, and a wide variety of patterns are known to have existed. However, 835 BCE is much earlier than that, and little is known about the gear used by the Spartans at that time (or anything else for that matter: it's a "Dark Age" in Greek pre-history). Armour may have been made of perishable materials, such as leather. It's even possible that helmets weren't used at all. AFAIK, only one helmet survives dating to that period, which may have belonged to a high-ranking officer. It is made of boar tusks."
