  • Gun ownership in Germany is tightly controlled and you may only own firearms for target shooting and hunting. The only handguns you can own are those intended to kill an animal that has already been wounded. You have to buy a permit (for each weapon I think) and there are strict regulations about storage and transport to the range or hunting site. Automatic weapons are banned.
  • I've been researching this subject for similar moves, initially to Canada. My conclusion is that most of my guns will remain in the US in storage, where they are now. Where possible, the only guns I will take with me are my Thompson Contenders, single-shot break action target pistols with removable barrels chambering a selection of cartridges. Any other firearms make things much too complicated, if it is possible to consider them at all.
  • 1) Here a translation of the "Weapons law in the Federal Republic of Germany": http://www.stockholm.diplo.de/Vertretung/stockholm/sv/download__weapon__law,property=Daten.pdf 2) You can also read the interesting information from the Germany consulates in the U.S. Please note: the following information is not legally binding! http://www.germany.info/relaunch/info/consular_services/customs/firearms.html Different issues should be considered: - carrying your weapons over the border (different regulations for EU and non-EU states) - buying weapons in Germany - carrying your weapons inside Germany - using your weapons inside Germany Anyway, the use of weapons is much more regulated than in the U.S., and if you do not have very good reasons, I suggest you let your weapons in the U.S.
  • As gun ownership is tightly controlled and laws concerning weapons are strictly enforced, it is better to keep your weapons in the US or sell them there. If you want to shoot in Germany, it is possible for hunting, sports and collectors, but I'd recommend to get your weapons in Germany. That should be the way with the least amount of bureaucracy involved.
