It depends how good a counterfeit they are. Vending machines not only read the face of the bill to identify the denomination, they read special features incorporated within the bank notes to detect frauds. There are numerous anti-counterfeit features included in bank notes, including hologrammatic strips, identifying threads, phosphorescent dots, watermarks, alignment of images on the back and front of the bill, paper thickness, and text that becomes illegible when photocopied. There are a lot of tricks built into bank notes that can be used to identify fakes.
