Slapper, I like the word although it is not too nasty. I am sure I would use much worse due to my condition but i would have a great excuse.

not all who have the tourettes syndrome shout out nasty words. many of them only have ticks like whistling or clicking a pen, or something like that. the difference with people who have tourettes and people who dont have tourettes is mostly about control. my brother has it, and he cannot stop himself from doing his ticks, like whistling. yes in some cases the ticks are also shouting, but its not only that, it goes further than that alone. but, if i had tourettes and i had the shout tick, i probably would shout the most embarrasing word i could come up with at that time. the word i would least wanted to say/shout.

I don't think this question is very nice, even if it was asked innocently. It's certainly not funny at all. It's in extremely poor taste. Make that offensive, ignorant, rude and bigoted. Tourette's is a real disease and a real disability. Do you make fun of people who are retarded or have cancer, too? The FACT is, more than 65% of people with Tourette's Syndrome wouldn't shout ANYTHING. Less than 35% of Tourette's Syndrome patients have Copralalia (uncontrolled swearing.) That's WAY LESS than half of them, yet that's the symptom that people seem to associate the most with the syndrome. It's sad, really. I'm downrating this question, because it's disgustingly ignorant and offensive.

TS is diagnosed when “a person exhibits both multiple motor and one or more vocal tics…and must be diagnosed before the age of 18, according to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, fourth edition, DSM-IV-TR. While the cause is unknown, it is well known that genetic and environmental factors are involved. Coprolalia, on the other hand, is essentially involuntary, and rather profane, vocal tics. Coprolalia is not contextual swearing. It is usually expressed “out of social or emotional context, and may be spoken in a louder tone…than normal conversation…and can be a single word, or complex phrases.” Coprolalia is actually considered a co-morbid condition with TS, meaning that it’s not necessarily part of TS, but rather a rare and unusual characteristic. The Tourette Syndrome Association has discovered that actually fewer than 15% of people with TS have Coprolalia. Studies have concluded that, in different parts of the world, the rate of TS patients also having Coprolalia are: 8% in the U.S.A., 14% in Brazil, 20% in Coasta Rica, 8.5% in Chille, and 4 % in Japan.
