First of all, I don't care what part of the country you live in, or how many people live in your small town (anybody's town)...there is no reason not to lock your door. Opportunity leads to motive. From what you have stated, other than trespassing, no other crime is being committed, since there is no breaking and entering of the property. I can imagine the feeling of being startled to come into contact with a stranger in a area wouldn’t expect to find them. The key is to maintain a authority, state your position, ( homeowner, etc) ask the person to step outside, before you are willing to help them., vocalize this instruction. This puts distance between the two, and also gives you the opportunity to let them know their error in entering without invite, while maintaining a position of authority.
