  • Nope; it is merely redistributed. The initial matter for the development of the embryo is drawn from the mother's body and the food that she takes in; after the baby is born, all that added mass has to come from the food and liquids that the baby takes in. The baby's growing body breaks down the molecules in food and either uses those very same atoms to build up the material of its own cells, or uses energy derived from the exothermic breakdown of those molecules to power such building. Believe me, even though babies poop a lot, they take in a lot more than they get rid of. But every atom which makes up us and every other living thing on the planet has come from somewhere else.
  • Are you refering to the Lomonosov-Lavoisier law?
  • The Laws of Physics don't state this. That's the old Law of Conservation of Matter which is, for the most part, incorrect. The correct statement is that of Conservation of Energy by which energy may not be created nor destroyed, only change forms. The extension to this is that matter can be described as energy by E = mc^2, thus if matter is "Destroyed" or "Created" it is a change in energy, and thus the energy content is constant. When a child is grown, matter is not introduced. The particles used to make the embryo come from the mother's own supply of "bits". Her proteins and carbohydrates and vitamins whizzing around her bloodstream feed the growth of the child, hence the term "Eating for two".
  • But some matters surely get destroyed in the process ...so guess it is a null effect :-)
  • Uhhhhhh wrong and wrong. Matter can be created or destroyed and converted to or from an enourmous about of energy. Also when a baby is created it's just redistributed matter. Pregnant women need to eat a lot.
  • You are, literally, what you eat. Newborn babies are what their moms ate.
  • only thing created or destroyed would be a new soul.. otherwise mass and energy remain in equilibrium
  • energy/matter is just taken from different places and mashed together :)
  • Only nuclear babies are fused together from pure energy. The energy appears to be mostly composed of cries and spittle, based on what I hear and see leaking out of these beings when they are in restaurants that I am in. Next time you hear a baby crying, stay far away, because they are probably radioactive.
