In the Army, you can drop on request during Basic if you are judged to be unable to adapt to military life (usually with the concurrance of your drill sergeant, the unit commanding officer, the unit command sergeant major, and the unit chaplain). You can also get tossed out for failing to meet height/weight standards, for failing to meet physical fitness standards, and a raft of others. It's not easy but it can be done if you're willing to be stubborn enough and endure the disgust of your fellow soldiers. You also end up with a General Dischargem, which may or may not be appended with "Under Honorable Conditions". Not having a full Honorable Discharge may keep you from getting jobs that ask about one's military history.
