Marital status has zero effect on credit score. The same things could happen during divorce as a fallout with a friend or family member you had joint accounts with or co-signed for. For a house, they should refinance if they'd break even from closing costs (should closing costs apply... there are no-cost refis out there!) the savings on interest rates would pay for the house by the time they planned on moving.
