  • The young like to drink because they can't, same with smoking. I think around the home, in moderation and with supervision is a great way to teach them about drinking and to be responsible about it. Good Question.
  • Sometimes it is the media exposure that seesm to draw them in or maybe their parents are happy drinkers and they want to join in on the merriment. Stick with Yohoo and Gatorade and all the soda pop you can imbibe until you reach 21. You will be their soon enough and everyone gets their turn up at bat. Just be careful and do so in moderation.
  • Why bother? You're a kid for eighteen years (21 in this scenario), then you're an adult for the rest of your life. You have many, many years to drink responsibly if that's what you choose to do... What's the rush? Also, please define "extreme moderation"... I find the term comical.
  • What else is the point to drink but get drunk?
  • In the wine producing countries of Europe it is quite common for relatively young children to be allowed wine with water during meals and they seem to have a far healthier relationship with alcohol later in life than countries like the United Kingdom and United States. As to why youths drink to get drunk, it must be the sudden access to the hitherto forbidden fruit - or the fact that it's still forbidden.
  • I can shed a little light from personal experience. My parents allowed me to drink in small quantities from about age 14 on. By the time I was 17 I was allowed to have 2-3 beers occasionally. The kids in my school that we absolutely forbidden to drink were the ones who went absolutely nuts when they were able to do so. Two of them died in single car accidents shortly after graduation while driving drunk.
  • I agree...In moderation as a part of the meal or in a relaxed and safe setting extremly moderate resposible drinking is acceptable. My kids have tasted beer and wine. I think a lot of times though youth drink either because they parents forbide it, or the adults in their life aren't showing a very healthy example of how to drink responsibly. IMHO, Adults /parents tend to drink to relieve anger, frustration, loneliness, stress...Kids do as they are taught unfortunately..even the lesson we dont want them to learn. Drinking is more fun as a celebration..not as a way to drown your sorrows..
