I'm trying to teach an adult basic maths, like pie charts, mean, median etc. I'm used to teaching children, but am unsure what would be the best way to approach it with an adult. What's the best way to do it to ensure the adult doesn't feel awkward?

No, no, no, you're doing it all wrong. It would be best for the adult to make it AS AWKWARD AS POSSIBLE, as he should have learned basic math when he was a youngin,' like me.

I would say if one of your goals is to not make them feel awkward than make sure they don't get any vibes from you that you think they should know the material already because of their age.

I think the basic concepts behind those are exactly the same for any age group. Also, try to use examples that an adult can better relate to. For example, it would be good to find out what this person does for a living and use some of the terms he uses in his work for creating the charts, or maybe you could use monetary figures, like a monthly budget to make a point.
