1920s vs. now in america. People use to do dance contests to see who can last the longest (going several days) now...It's hard to get people off the couch once every few days. Oh, and 1920s vs. now in america People use to climb and sit atop flag poles for fun...What do we do now? Nothing like that. Lazy bastards (I would do it...but afraid of heights :P)

From the 1950s to now, the opening of martial arts instruction from Asia to the world, and the releasing of many ancient guarded secrets, from the world's most healthful "Emperor's diet & exercise patterns", to acupressure massage therapy, to the invisible inner structure of Tai Chi, to vibrations & energy controls, to actual body movements and unarmed combat techniques. In the 1950s, none of this was available ... now it can be found easily __________ Technological advancements ... from the things that use electricity to space travel to nanobots to our rapidly developping understanding of the universe we live in. __________ Tolerance of different cultures ... although there are still warring factions in many parts of the world where people are killed for what they believe or for their sexual orientation ... overall worldwide, this has been diminished to a miniscule number of extremists while most people have become much more accepting of others and their differences.

bigotry appears to be increasing when we would expect the opposite. the ability of the avereage american to be brainswashed by media and political nonsense reaches new heights when we would expect the open age of the internet to provide sufficient independent and objective information to counter this tendency

I think the feminist movement of the 1970's and the pill started a new age of sexuality and freedom. Unfortunately all the sex and fun led to the spread of HIV and other downers. Now HIV and AIDS have so prevalent in society...I don't really know that 1 little pill caused all this, of course, but it did lead to a huge change in society.

Established neighborhoods where people knew their neighbors and shopped and went to school in their own neighborhood. My elementary school, our neighborhood grocery store and pharmacy were a block and a half from our house .. our church, two blocks, and a huge wonderful park 3 blocks. To this day I can name every family or widow in every house on my block growing up.

The ability to live outside of expected societal roles. Women today can own property and get credit wthout a husband or father to say it is OK. Men can stay at home and be the chief childcare providers. Women and men of color can be company CEOs. Kids can go to schools that aren't racially segregated, people of any and all races can fall in love and marry, have children and expect to have normal lives. Sexual differences are openly discussed and accepted. Most people aren't forced to retire at a particular age. Women are not necessarily destined to be mothers, and men are not necessarily destined to be the only income provider for a growing family. There is so much more. While we have a long way to go, we have made some incredible strides forward in my lifetime alone. And a few backwards. Society has frowned on discipline and then wonders why kids today are arogant and self-serving. Parents are afraid to discipline their children for fear of being jailed. People today have grown so used to government oversight that they expect to be kept safe. This is new. Not long ago people knew that there were no garantees in life, accidents happen and you couldn't find someone to blame for everything. They knew there was no bail out for bad investments, poor hygiene, bad budgeting, lousy diet, angry driving, over-drinking. They knew that their actions had consequences and that they would have to pay for these actions. This is not the mind set of today.
