backfiring through the carb means that your intake valves are open when your plugs are firing or you've got a hotspot in your combustion chamber (like a sharp corner or bit of metal sticking out on the head) or the fuel mixture is detonating in the intake manifold - this might happen if for some reason your engine is passing a LOT of heat to the intake manifold. Odds are your plugs are firing during the intake stroke. The next most likely possibility is that you've got a hot spot in one or more cylinders. It's not often that you see an intake manifold get too hot.
