"prefixes" are arbitrary and whoever owns the domain decides what to call the different hosts. WWW is just a standard name for a website, FTP for FTP sites, mail for mail servers, etc. Some sites with multiple servers have www1 or just 1 instead of www, or any other name they choose. Nowadays most website owners have their systems set up so typing in the domain without any host/prefix at all takes you to the website. For example http://answerbag.com is the same as http://www.answerbag.com
