I've had this experience at times. I decided to see the doctor, and got referrals to sleep specialists. It's basically related to lack of sufficient sleep. Driving is a semi-hypnotic activity, so sleep deficits quickly show up when driving. Once a person starts having dropping eyelids, there could be micro-seconds of sleep at any moment. Immediately take the next exit & rest in the car for 20 minutes. Trying to drive the final 10 minutes to get home could be too late! When a person does some stimulating activity, sleep debt is hidden. However, in activities like driving, being in a dark movie theater, reading a book, etc., the body is likely to fall asleep for just a few seconds before awakening --- that's enough time to kill you (and others). There's an excellent book, all 450 pages, called "Promise of Sleep" which talks about the dangers of driving while sleepy, and offers tips on getting proper sleep.

Only twice in my lifetime, and after the last time, I have never driven in less than tip-top shape again. The 1st time: I accidently fell asleep at my girlfriends house, and her Dad came downstairs and woke me up and told me it was time to go home. I got on the highway and, next thing I knew, I saw a guy, (with dufflebag), heading full bore for the bar-ditch! I was barrelling down on him dead asleep, and he was diving for his life! Luckily, I missed him! The 2nd time: My family and a friends family, (me, wife, child, and him, wife, and child), were driving straight thru to N. Colorado from Texas. My turn to drive came at 2 a.m. With everyone asleep, at around 4:30 a.m., I fell dead asleep! I woke up with grass and weeds flying everywhere, (I was in the bar-ditch, again)! I pulled over and swore to never drive, (even just tired), again! And, I haven't!

I pulled into a rest stop to get coffee and fresh air. Then I continued driving home. It has happened too often in the past. Not recently.
-
Yes, it has happened to me and I did stop to rest.
-
Yes. It was really dangerous. I didn't stop to rest. I couldn't. There was an emergency, i had to go.

I did few times and two times my hands slipped. Luckily I was ok. Then I started taking naps in between. Used to drive long miles.
