THere are two meanings. ONe is a very bad bruising of your leg requiring weeks of healing while very painful, almost like you got kicked by a horse. It's usually caused by a blunt force trauma, usually during sports. But people also call a really bad cramp in their leg or foot, a charlie horse. Often they happen when you are lying in bed and then all of a sudden your leg cramps and you can't straighten or move it and it's well, really painful. It's caused by mineral deficiencies. I often get them and if I eat bananas a lot, they go away for me. THe best way to get them to immediately stop while they are happening is to somehow flex your foot up so your foot and leg make an "L" shape. It's hard to do but it makes the cramp stop. THe contractions try to get you to almost point your toe but that's not the direction you should let it go. That just makes it worse and longer.
