  • There is a virus in all of us that causes canker sores. IN some people it is very active in others it never shows up at all.
  • I think they form when the PH balance in the mouth is off. Lemon juice seems to help, since it is alkaline. Most people think that lemon juice is acid, when in fact it's just the opposite. I have a tendency to get them if I eat tomatoes too often. http://familydoctor.org/online/famdocen/home/articles/613.html
  • Canker sores are not caused by herpes simplex virus. Those are cold sores, which are different in texture and appearance from canker sores. Canker sores are not caused by a virus but are usually a reaction to either allergies, a certain bacteria, stress or trauma (such as when you bite your tongue or cheek or get braces for the first time.) To prevent canker sores, take plenty of Vitamin C and drink lots of water. Also avoid foods that may cause you to react with a canker sore. It is helpful to keep a food diary to see if there is a pattern.
