  • Are you trying to view a specific website when you get that error, or does it happen with all of them? When did the problem start? Try this: in your web browser's address bar, type 216.239.51.104 If that brings up the Google homepage, then you are having a DNS issue with the Google site. When you browse the World Wide Web, you make requests to a DNS (Domain Name Service) server to translate domain names (like http://www.google.com) into IP addresses. Domain names are easier to remember, but IP addresses are required when you want to view websites; every computer on the Internet has a unique IP address. You were able to type one of the Google IP addresses into your web browser's address bar and view the site but not type http://www.google.com into the bar because your DNS request could not be fulfilled. If you can view some websites but not others, either those sites are down at the moment or your DNS requests for their IP addresses aren't getting fulfilled for whatever reason. Test the DNS theory by following these steps: a. Click Start b. Click Run c. Type cmd (Windows 2000 or XP) or command (Windows 95, 98 and Me) in the box d. Click OK e. At the prompt, type nslookup (name of website you're trying to view) and hit Enter f. If you get one or more IP addresses through the DNS lookup, type them into your web browser's address bar to make sure that they bring up the site you're trying to view. If you get one or more error messages, you should contact your ISP and ask them why you're getting them. If you can't view any websites by typing in their domain names into your address bar, make sure that your DNS settings are correct. If they are correct, contact your ISP and ask them what the problem is.
