My sister and wife think my brother has a mild case. My thinking is, why make him feel any more unusual by pointing such a thing out.

Yes. I have to do business with him often. Qualified professionals share my opinion... Sad.

I don't think I would say anything to a person I thought had a medical/mental disorder unless I was very close with them, ie: a relative or lifetime friend. There are so many disorders that closely resemble Asperger's Syndrome and or Pervasive Developmental Disorders, what makes you think this person has AS? Is this an adult or child? (most AS is diagnosed before adulthood). Symptoms of the disorder have to be present in all settings - not just at home or at work/school - and over considerable periods of time. With PDD, there's a lack of social interaction, an impairment in nonverbal behaviors, and a failure to develop normal peer relations. A person with a PDD may also ignore facial expressions or may not look at others. Asperger syndrome can be very difficult to diagnose. All people can exhibit unusual behaviors occasionally, or they can seem shy around others sometimes - without having a PDD. Their behavior might just be part of their personality. In my opinion, I wouldn't say anything.

I just found out I probably have Aspergers.. when I first found out I was devastated...but as soon as I started reading up on the details of it, lots of difficult things in my life started to make sense. I felt as though I was reading my own diary that had been written by someone else. Understanding myself and my challenges better is far, far more important than the notion "what she doesn't know can't hurt her". If you don't feel comfortable enough in your relationship to speak up, then I would suggest annonymously sending an educational book about Aspergers to this person. What there is to learn is highly valuable to his or her future.

Many have suggested he seek some assistance, but when you throw narcissism in there and a few other quirks, it's a dangerous combination. He does not want any help, unfortunately. It's a dificult issue to broach. Surprisingly, many men discover it through marriage / personal counseling when their relationships experience difficulty, if it is discovered as an adult. I wish you - and him - good luck.

Isn't that related to Autism in some way? What are the symptoms of Asperger's?
