It is because the majority of people are heterosexual rather than homosexual, therefore there is an underlying assumption made by most people that an unknown person is heterosexual unless or until they discover to the contrary. I expect even homosexuals make this same assumption about the sexuality of strangers, since it is simply a matter of probability, unless the context dictates otherwise ie. they are in a gay club or somesuch.

I've never come across anybody who asked me, or anybody else within my hearing, if we are gay. I'll take your word for it that it happens but, as the vast majority of the population are straight perhaps asking if you are heterosexual seems superfluous.

I think because most people are hetro so why ask. I am left-handed and sometime I get people saying "Oh, you're left handed!" I dont see the big deal. I never hear them saying that to a right-handed person. I guess because left-handed people, like gays, are the minority.
