  • If the GPS is not solar powered, I'll choose the compass.
  • We always took a compass but rarely used it. We carried great topo maps of the area and felt comfortable even going cross country. We'd spend up to two weeks and never got lost with maps and visual clues.
  • I like a map (sometimes) and finding directions by the sun and the stars. I hike in pretty much the same way as I travel abroad - I get to the starting point by the quickest means possible, and then proceed to get lost and enjoy the trip, wherever it takes me. I spent a week in the desert north of L.A. once with nothing but a sunburn to start out with. It was magic. No compass, no GPS, no map, no anything.
