Why do people play the lottery, blackjack, and similar games? They are, statistically, a waste of money.

Someone has to win sometime, why not me? I certainly don't put down much money....I only do a lottery ticket now and then, but the people who have won never thought they would, right?

I've heard the lottery referred to as a tax on stupid people. But you can never underestimate the power of human hope. And unlike other gambling, someone does eventually wins the lottery. Why not me? Why not my parents or partner? I think it's also easy to justify when you consider that some of the money goes toward shool or other social funding.

It gives people hope that maybe they will win the lottery and make their dreams come true by buying thing they believe would make their life better.

It's worse than a waste of money; it's a voluntary tax and the government already gets way too much of our money. But as to why people do it, the lust to get something for nothing floods our bloodstream with addictive chemicals, endorphins and adrenalin, without leaving needle marks. Some people can do it occasionally for the excitement. Others become true addicts and spiral downward into losing everything and usually borrowing from all their friends and relatives as well, stealing to cover those losses and going to jail. Go into a casino sometime and look at the people feeding slot machines. Do they look like they're having fun?

Well you've lumped these things together. That's a misconception right there. The lottery is purely luck. Gaming machines are purely luck. Card games aren't. I'm not a blackjack player, but I do understand there is a level of awareness that could make a difference. I'm a poker player. I'm a good poker player. There's skill involved. Yes, the cards are going to fall and your skill can't change that. But your awareness of the game, and being able to read others, and understand your odds will greatly increase your game. And learning how to push at the right time can lead to some cash earnings. I've made some respectable money playing poker.
