i would first suspect the plug wires. second would be a coil pack. third and least likely would be the wiring to the coil packs. wouldn't hurt to make sure your battery connections are clean and tight.

when it sputters does it bog down almost like down shifting ,does it ever stall ? ,is it a manual or standard ? ,is the check engine light on ? ,if it is get it checked ? ,a couple of things u can try is . 1. change fuel filter, and a bottle of dry gas ,u could have water in the tank 2. do a tune up ,at least plugs . 3. put a bottle of fuel inj, or carb cleaner preferably Lucas ,and run a higher grade fuel to clean out the fuel system 4. get a fuel pressure test 5. check ur detent or, kickdown cable if equiped with either ,if either one of those are out of adjustment ,they will cause the car to downshift under a load , higher rpms going up a hill if none of theses suggestions help im sorry and u want more suggestions answer the couple of questions i wrote on top good luck
