  • Of course it's proper to expect it back. How many women are there who get engaged just to keep the ring and sell it? That might be one way to earn a wage, but the enemies you'd gather would overwhelm you after a while.
  • This is only my opinion, but I would consider it only right to return the ring, regardless of why the engagement was broken.
  • A engagement ring is given in contemplation of marriage. If the wedding doesn't go through, the ring should be returned regardless of the reason or the person making the decision.
  • usually if the man breaks it off the woman can keep the ring. If the woman breaks it off she would return it. I personally wouldn't know but i think that's how it works
  • This issue has been litigated numerous times. On one side you argue that the ring constitutes consideration for a contract. On the other you argue it was a gift. Most courts have held it to be a gift with the g/f/fiance/ex wife getting to keep the ring. And for those of you that said you wouldn't want to keep it because of memories etc...would you say the same thing if it was worth 100K?
  • Well I didnt get mine back :( $4500 down the drain. And as far as I know, she pawned it at a pawn shop, to get the cash out of it.
  • Legally, the ring has to be returned to the rightful owner. In most states except i think Georgia and two or three more, the engagement ring represents consideration of a contract. No matter what reason, or who breaks it off, if the engagement is broken, the ring myst be returned, its just like any other contract, if the contract is broken by any party, the consideration must be returned. Hope that helps.
  • I would return it. I feel it is the right thing to do.
  • I think it depends on the individual relationship My fiance and I broke up recently. We have both decided I should keep the ring. 1. It means so much to me, I have been wearing it 14 months and it proves how much he did love me. 2. He wants me to keep it as he doesn't regret asking me and still loves me. I bought him a ring also which he is keeping.
  • Yes, you should return it.
  • dunno, I have 3 engagement rings, I kept them all. (after all, what is he going to do w/them?)
  • Yes. The contract did not get consummated. It is therefore the property of the purchaser.
  • An engagement ring is a gift of affection and does not have to be returned. However, many times it is because of the value that the other person dished out.
