  • Someone that I adore recently is M. Ward. I discovered him through Last.fm but he's starting to pop up in the background music on TV shows, so he's sure to be known better soon. He writes deceptively simple songs with subtly complex structures and lyrics based around acoustic guitar. "Chinese Translation" is the one that sticks with me. Here's the lyrics (from memory this time) **** I sailed a wild, wild sea Climbed up a tall, tall mountain I met an old, old man Who sat beneath the willow tree He said "now if you got some questions, Go and lay them at my feet. But my time here is brief so you'll have to pick just three." And I said: "What do you do with the pieces of a broken heart? And how can a man like me remain in the light? And if life is really as short as they say, then why is the night so long?" And then the sun went down and he sang for me this song: "You see I once was a young fool like you. Afraid to do the things that I knew I had to do so I played an escapade just like you. Yes, I played an escapade just like you! "I sailed a wild, wild sea Climbed up a tall, tall mountain I met an old, old man Who sat beneath the old oak tree He said 'now if you got some questions, Go and lay them at my feet. But my time here is brief so you'll have to pick just three.' "And I said: 'What do you do with the pieces of a broken heart? And how can a man like me remain in the light? And if life is really as short as they say, then why is the night so long?' "And then the sun went down and he sang for me this song." *** It's a beautiful melody and you can really hear the Dylan influence in the circular structure of the lyrics, kind of like "All Along the Watchtower". The song folds in on itself, becomes a song within a song. To me, in singing the song back to the young man, the old man answers all three questions. Some things you can only learn by experience, in the journey. The other thing M.Ward recorded that I'm mildly obsessed with is a cover of David Bowie's "Let's Dance" that is just him and an acoustic guitar. His version is gentle and sad and makes me listen to the original song in an entirely different way.
