Using your own domain name:
Adds a certain amount of prestige and status to the blog, but costs money. I've heard arguments for and against your own domain for a blog. I tend to take a compromise position. If your blog gets a life of its own and becomes really popular, you might want to get your own domain name and use ad revenue to help fund the cost.
Using a blogging website:
Free. Easy to set up. Free. Not quite as classy as having your own domain name, but is that what you really need? It's free. You'll appreciate free. Until you need the prestige of your own domain name. Having a blog with the URL dannyshotsauce.blogspot.com is not as classy as www.dannyshotsauce.com
I guess it depends on what's most important to you.
