Of the 3 you have listed, the fuel filter is likely to be most noticeable upon acceleration. Incorrect timing should be noticeable while idling. Internal engine problems can often be diagnosed through examination of engine fluids, exaust or unusual engine noise. Also, to be considered, would be components of the emmissions control system, although they should have activated the check engine light.
