It depends on if they were being honest about it or not. If they are being honest about it from the beginning, then it's fine. While it may sound a bit Machiavellian, everyone has ulterior motives in what they do. If they are being deceptive, I'd tell my attractive friend that this new person is a manipulative sleezeball. If my opinion is important to my friend, then there will be no relationship. If my opinion is not important to my friend, then kissing up to me would not benefit that other person anyway.
