Is it bad to wear white socks with black tennis shoes/boots, or does this rule only apply to dress shoes?

No I do not think it is wrong with tennis shoes or boots in fact personally I prefer the white sports socks. Yes of course it applies to dress shoes.

i dont like white socks but its upto the individual. i just wear the trainer socks which are colourful with patterns on or cartoon characters. most of the lads where i live where black socks. i just dont like the white socks but that doesnt mean its bad. its what ever you feel comfortable doing.

no its up to you what you wear so yeah but if you wear a shirt or pants that has nothing to do with tennis you may be caught in competitive tennis.
