Is it appropriate to wear a black, backless dress to a wedding if I wear a shaw or something? How about the reception?

It's appropriate to wear whatever you feel comfortable in, unless the invitation includes a dress code.

I would only wear something like that with a shawl if it's an evening wedding. It doesn't sound appropriate for a day wedding.

it depends entirely upon how true to tradition the Bride is. It is her wedding so you should ask her. I wouldn't give a crap what you wore, but some people do care and get their panties in a bunch over stupid stuff like that so... Ask the Bride! Or face possible ridicule and snide little jeers behind your back because chances are no one will be honest about it with you to your face.

if it is an evening wedding (5pm or later) black is fine and a shawl should be worn during the religious portion of the ceremony but can be discarded during the reception. have fun!
