  • Great question. I gave the general definition in answer to "what are trolls?" ¤ There is a lot of gray area, some people think they know. Stablebuy commented: "This is a general Internet definition of a troll, which I think most people would agree with here on Answerbag. However, there are some distinctive aspects of Answerbag which expand the definition a little... most users here would add the following behaviors: - Downrating answers without leaving a comment; - Naming an individual in a question or answer in a derogatory way; - Creating "sock puppet" accounts (extra accounts with different nicknames) to create the appearance of agreement or to criticize others without having to incur the consequences on your "main" identity." http://www.answerbag.com/a_view/1087983 ¤ ¤ Not everyone agrees with this ¤ ¤ *TRUE trolls should be handled by staff, do not feed the trolls.
  • It's not really so different if you look more at the spirit of the internet definition. It is still someone looking for attention and doing things (trolling, like the fishing term) for responses of some kind. And they do just that here. They also get very near starting what is called "flame wars", just like regular trolls. But just because someone downrates you doesn't make them a troll. I was on a site in the late 90's that had a different meaning for trolls but that was sort of an inside joke and was closer to what a fairy tale creature like a troll was. We always had to explain that we weren't net trolls, but another troll a McTroll as we called them. But here, a troll is still a troll.
