Why is it you have to go to more schooling to become a veterinarian than a doctor, yet the pay is substantially less?

I don't think it takes any longer but there aren't near as many vet schools so it is harder to get into one.

Maybe it takes more time to learn how to diagnose a problem when the patient can't just tell you how they're feeling...?

I checked out the University of Guelph and the University of Ottawa. Guelph's vet program is 4 years long, after you have completed at least 2 years of undergaduate work - a minimum of 6 years after high school. Ottawa's medicine program is 4 years long but you must have at least 3 years of undergraduate work in specific areas - a minimum of 7 years..
