  • The amount each driver earns as 'winnings' includes bonuses from sponsor programs. Not all teams participate in every sponsor program. For instance (and I'm making this example up), Kobalt tools might post a $50,000 pool divided among the first 5 drivers to finish that use Kobalt tools and have the decal on the car/uniform. Of course, not all drivers (those sponsored by Dewalt, Mac Tools, etc.) will participate. So the Kobalt prize money will be awarded to drivers out of the top five who participate, possibly causing their winnings to be higher than a team higher in the standings. There are many, many different programs, and they vary quite a bit in the ammount of money offered and the prize structure. Depending on how a driver finishes in relation to other cars in the same programs, this can significantly affect his winnings total for a particular race.
