I just phoned Solmar in alicante, told them I had no credit card but wanted to hire a car. The said no problem, pay cash when you get here, took the drivers licence number, gave me a reference number and that was it. We paid cash on arrival plus a tank of petrol, nothing else! Absolutly marvellous - I will only use them in future

If you plan on using a check or debit card, your best bet is to contact the company you plan on renting the car from to find out what their policies are.

If you plan on using cash, check out this website for more info:

I had to do this in Miami a few years back. It's not impossible if you put down a cash deposit to cover any unanticipated extra charges. Mine ran about $350 for a Kia sedan for a week. I got all of it back, and future rentals from the same agency required lower deposits. These agencies were not Hertz or Avis, but the cars were functional and rented for half of what the major agencies were charging co-workers for theirs.

Some of the lesser known companies will take cash deposits, they will be harder to find but they are around.

Try to find out some of the local companies from the internet before you travel, they can be quite good.

It all depends where and the policy of each company but usually most will but require a LARGE deposit of cash if you have no prior record with them

Have lots of cash and lots of ID. Some companies will not rent without a card regardless but the secondary markets will most likely accommodate you.

a money order. Most rental companies will take money orders. And it doesn't even haveto be for the exact amount. They'll send you in a few weeks time the remaining balance of whatever you didn't use.

Try one of the no-name rental places that are more likely to accept a large cash deposit...
