Sixteen years of age would be the most appropriate age to begin a weightlifting program.

It is more of a fusing of your growth plates then an age. You are do functional weight training at any age, even kids, but you do not want to get into heavy lifitng until you are fully grown and have started really maturing. It takes a lot of work to to it right and not hurt yourself, you do not want to mess around with weights. It is usually high school age though.

It really depends on the person and if they are mature enough. I've seen 10 year olds lift weights with parental supervision. Some children need to start earlier in life because of weight problems. It really depends. I started weight lifting at 13 years old and I'm female. There was a teenage class of about four people and the trainer would fit us and show us how to lift the weight. I'm 5'10 and weigh 115 pounds. I started weight lifting because I was interested in getting some tone. I've been weight lifting for 5 years and I gained some tone. I don't look like the women on the magazines though. I can bench press 95 pounds at the most. That's pretty amazing for someone of my statue. I weight lift at school everyday and I have had a bunch of classes on weight lifting. I'm pratically a pro now. I was teaching some people in my class how to weight lift on the machines. It just takes practice. It's not that hard. The appropiate age would be around 13-14 to begin weight lifting. The person should be taught about the saftey of the weights and how to use the weights. Maybe they should take a class and have parental supervision when they first begin.

I wouldn't start too early because of the danger of hurting myself. I started lifting when I was sixteen and this seems like the right age to start doing this.
