I'm afraid that many details have faded from my mind, but I have a memory of seeing a TV show that covered a range of topics relating to marriage and reproduction. There was an example shown of a family that consisted of one wife and four husbands.

So, what kind of society do you think would exist in which a woman would have multiple husbands? This isn't what you most likely are thinking. In this instance, it occurred in some place in Africa, where poverty was an extreme and widespread problem. Many men simply were too poor to support wives and families.

The men in this example were four brothers, who, like most of their countrymen, were extremely poor. None of these brothers had the means to support a wife by himself; but between the four of them, they had the means to support one wife; so they took one wife to be shared among the four of them.

there most certainly were times in herstory when women were encouraged to take on more than one husband (and frankly, she is much more adept at satisfying multiple husbands than polygamists in this day and age...biologically speaking--no contest!) During and after the ___________________________Irish potato famine
women were encouraged to have more than one husband, probably because the population had diminshed and procreation was needed. And we may have to bring out the polygamamas again with this endless war!

I think the Amazons did this.

"the Amazons went to war they would not kill all the men. Some they would take as slaves, and once or twice a year they would have sex with their slaves."

    Sounds kinda familiar! ;-)
