  • Yes. These pirates are not the swashbuckeling people from the movies. The most recent event that made the news can be found at http://www.cnn.com/2005/WORLD/africa/11/05/somalia.pirates/
  • There has been a lot of discussion about whether or not this November attack was by pirates. Many people feel that it may have been a terrorist attempt, that is now being covered up. http://www.cnsnews.com/news/viewstory.asp?Page=%5CForeignBureaus%5Carchive%5C200511%5CFOR20051107b.html

  • It would depend highly on where you are traveling. The most common pirate attacks in recent times are in southeast Asia, where parts of Africa, Somalia and extending towards Indonesia. This area in southeast Asia and the south china sea are very prone to pirate activity. If you were concerned with a trip down to the Caribbean like Haiti, or anywhere south of the Keys you should have no worries. There are many preventative measures a cruise ship has to oppose marine attacks. (unless these pirates were heavily armed) You should have no issues when traveling on a large cruise vessel (who usually has a security force on board). So in all it definitely depends on where you're going, if its not in the South China sea from Somalia to Indonesia i don't think you'll have anything to worry about.
