What would happen if you soaked a 3rd rail in a train station with a water gun?

The short answer here is that it would get wet!!! If you were standing on the platform and fired the water gun at the third rail then the water stream would 'break up' way before it hits the rail and would therefore not create the constant stream of liquid that would be required to transfer an electrical charge, which is what I think you are expecting to happen!

Then an electric current may travel along it. If it made it through to the body then it would probably be fatal.

To expand on the question of shorting out: Train stations probably have ways to prevent a short out in case the 3rd rail does get wet, like when it rains.

There was a case in London of someone urinating on the third rail. He didn't live and one part of him was unrecognisable apparently!
