It depends. If you're normally distant, and/or if they do this too from time to time, and ESPECIALLY if you've seen them earlier for a date (that went well) and you're more or less serious, it can work to your advantage, IF you do it very rarely.
Generally, I'd say it isn't smart. If I initiate communications (rather than just reply or pick up a phone) with a girl I'm seeing, I always interject a little "tongue in cheek" humour, to reduce the corny-ness factor, and make it seem less potentially desperate and attentive (also known as needy).
Then again, an even BETTER rule of thumb is not to overthink it, by constantly asking yourself if you should or shouldn't do something. Just do what you want to do, but just don't be a wuss!

not really, it's actually kind of sweet. Girls probably would like to have the memory of their bf before they go to bed. The only problem is that if they are already sleeping (which I doubt) they may get angry at you, but probably once they see it, they'll smile and go back to sleep.
