I do have a comment about the movie Mask. The movie was good, but did not delve enough into the use of the mind to help Rocky control his pain. That was talked about a lot more in the book.
-
flowers in the attic. i just watched it. and had JUST read it. AWFUL.
-
The Left Behind series. They get farther and farther from the plot and it disappoints me.
-
East of Eden. That book is completely engaging and creepy and sad and funny and deep. Every time something would happen and I'd think, "Okay, now that's as far as the story can go," I'd turn the page and see that I was wrong. The movie wasn't any of those fabulous things. In fact, it totally changed some of the characters and left important plot lines out entirely. Disappointing.

I like Lord of the Rings - the movie version. Mostly because it's easier to follow and there are no poems.
-
I think most Stephen King movies fall way short of the books, but most movies do. The movies that were at least close to as good as the book in my opinion: The Grapes of Wrath, with Henry Fonda. Moby Dick with Gregory Peck was a good movie, but Moby Dick was probably the best book ever written, so any attempt at a movie will fall short. The Right Stuff was a fantastic movie that equals the book.

Well people talk about the movie Dune being the worst translation from book to screen ever...and I think it still is. But Travolta managed to come in second with Battlefield Earth.
-
The Lord of the Rings. In particular, the second two movies. I enjoyed the first movie, for all its flaws, but the second and third really disappointed me. They were insults to the greatness of the novel.
-
Godfather movie(s) was better than the book. Puzo is NOT a great writer, and the book was not well crafted. The movies were POETRY, though!
-
There were a couple of "The Hobbit" movies that were really bad. Starship Troopers was also a disappointment.
-
Most books made movies, make really bad movies. The ONLY movie I thought was better than the book was the 5th Harry Potter. I hated that book. D< But the movie was decent.
-
They've ruined Stardust, by Neil Gaiman. =( Godfather was way better on film, though.
-
Book better than the movie: Last Exit to Brooklyn - movie had one-dimensional portrayals in too many key characters, notable exceptions being Jennifer Jason Leigh and Jerry Orbach . Movie better than the book: Dune - the first version filmed in Mexico with Kyle McLaughlin and Patrick Stewart and Sting and Sean Young (who looks like a direct descendant of Bob Hope in the final sceene) and ... A great work that condensed the huge read into a digestible piece of cinema. I have an alternative ending attached below, thought to be Lynch's preferred ending.

The movie of Eragon was terrible. The book was good. and none of the Harry Potter movies are as good as the books.
-
I think Ella Enchanted is the other way around. The movie is great but the book is just OK, I found it lacked originality but the movie was it's own story.
-
I actually like the Harry Potter movies better than the books although I enjoyed the books very much. I saw "He's just not that into you" which is a (needlessly long and very silly) fiction movie, a romatic comedy, based on a self help non fiction book. Utter crap.
