I use them for wiping up oil from engine casing when doing oil change, or for cleaning outdoor dirty furniture or something like that. If they are cotton, put them in the compost bin.

I usally use them for cleaning as long as they hold up...once they start disintegrating I feel confident I havent been wasteful.

companies litke Smiths Cleaning Rags http://www.smiths-rags.com.au/index.php actually recycle used clothes and sell them in bulk to companies that are after cleaning rags. So it probably isn't a bad idea to donate them so that companies like Smiths Cleanings Rags http://www.smiths-rags.com.au/index.php can pay for them.
