There was once an organization called the Flat Earth Society that asserted that the earth is flat and that space travel is a hoax. If you Google "flat earth society" you will find some assorted links, but all of them appear to be joke sites. I could find no Web presence of a serious Flat Earth Society, perhaps because acknowledging that the Internet exists would confirm that the Earth is a sphere. Nowadays, some people in the scientific community use the term "Flat-Earther" loosely to mean anyone who openly flaunts their inability to reason or flaunts ignorance of modern scientific knowledge.

The Flat Earth Society always was a joke organisation. Whilst even into the nineteenth century some people did think that the earth was flat, there was never a serious group that believed this.

I am convinced the earth is round but I still go about my business pretending it is flat. Maybe because I am a superficial person who can only see the surface of things and like to spend his life that way. Rarely rising beyond that to see the bigger picture. Most of my activities are find with the flat earth approach. Once in while find that a round earth is the model works better in a situation. A flight took a path over the north pole from chicago to the middle east was shorter than going east. If I half to be a trans. world pilot, I would looking at a round earth a lot more than I do today. Although recently I spend time with Google EARTH, Most of the time is spend near the surface which is a flat one.
