  • Agoraphobia is difficult at best...I still struggle with it, but now, sometimes I come out on top. I grew up with an agoraphobic mother. Both my brother and I have had it as well, since before puberty. Both of us are on medication to help us be more successful in our struggle with this life-oppressing fear. My medication includes an anti-anxiety, anti-depressant, and a very small dose of anti-psychotic/convulsant at night, which helps me sleep and augments the effectiveness of the anti-depressant. Truthfully, the medicine does help, but it doesn't remove the issue. Therapy and group therapy have helped me in more specific and effective ways. You learn personal skills to help you in specific situations, so you can "get through" the experience you fear and dread. Each time I make it through a group-setting at work, a party, or have to venture out into "unfamiliar territory," I feel stronger, and more able and confident that I will make it through the next one. After I overcome my fear a few times, the fear loses a bit of its power.
